Steven L. Spurlock is the managing principal of Wnuk Spurlock Architecture, an architecture, interiors and planning firm located in Washington, DC. His professional work includes commercial, institutional, religious, residential, and historic preservation projects.
Steven received his architectural training at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, from which he holds a B.Arch with distinction.
Steven served as a member of the AIA|DC chapter board, including as president in 2010. Following his service on the board of AIA|DC, Steven was elected to a three year term (2012-2014) as a regional director on the national board of the AIA. Steven also currently serves on the board of the Washington Architectural Foundation.
For a number of years, he has been an active member of the preservation community serving as chair of the Montgomery County, Md., Historic Preservation Commission, president of the board of the Maryland Association of Historic District Commissions, and as board member of Montgomery Preservation, Inc. He has acted as guest critic and lecturer at various local universities and regional preservation conferences.
Steven is dedicated to the notion of service beyond oneself. Leading by example, he and his firm have designed several award-winning pro bono projects for community groups and are actively involved in Washington arts and cultural activities. He has also donated considerable time to cultural organizations including serving as vice president for the Maritime Museum of America Project of the National Maritime Heritage Foundation and as president for the Washington Conservatory of Music. For his many professional and civic accomplishments, Steven was elevated to the College of Fellows of the AIA in 2012.
We asked Steven a few questions to get ready for the Aug. 5 debate:
AIA|DC|EAC: What do you think are the three most significant issues and opportunities facing the profession today?
- The value of our services.
- Where are the missing 32%?
- The value of our compensation.
AIA|DC|EAC: In one sentence, what advice do you have for young architects?
Steven Spurlock: Find your passion–but get licensed as quickly as possible.
AIA|DC|EAC: If you could use one word to describe yourself professionally what would it be?
Steven Spurlock: Thoughtful. I like a good problem, and I’m a consensus builder.
Steven will be joined by
